The WhiffOut story

WhiffOut started with a problem nearly every renter knows too well. You want to cook something real at 7pm, a proper sear, a fast stir-fry, a hot pot with friends, and instead you spend the night cracking windows, wedging the door, aiming a cheap fan at the ceiling, and praying the smoke alarm holds off. It never quite does. You end up on a chair batting the alarm with a tea towel while oil spits on the stove.

We looked hard at what people were actually reaching for, and none of it worked. Wall-mounted rangehoods need drilling, ducting and a landlord's permission you will never get. Pedestal fans just push the smell around the room and into the bedroom. The cheap online hoods look like an ugly black tech box and perform like one too. So the honest choices were: gut your bond doing an install you are not allowed to do, or stop cooking the food you love and order in again.

We did not think that was good enough. A rental kitchen should not shrink your life. So we built the appliance that was missing: a portable benchtop rangehood you plug in and use tonight. No drilling. No ducting. No awkward text to the landlord. It pulls smoke and grease straight out of the air at the pan, so the alarm stays quiet, the splashback stays clean, and the flat smells like a home the next morning instead of last night's dinner.

We were just as stubborn about how it looks. Most extraction gear is built to be hidden. This is built to be seen. The cream-and-orange finish sits on your benchtop like something you chose, not something you tolerated, closer to a Smeg kettle than a gadget. Because the one appliance on show should make the kitchen feel considered and grown-up, the kind of place you are proud to have people over.
